  • Your Obstetrical Journey
    • 009

As a board certified obstetrician, Dr. Cova has had more than 13 years of experience providing prenatal care. Her focus is providing individualized support throughout the entire pregnancy.

      1st Trimester

Dr. Cova believes it is important to begin prenatal care sooner rather than later. A missed menstrual cycle could be an indication of gestation. We start by making a confirmation of pregnancy appointment. This is an opportunity for Dr. Cova and her staff to provide support and expertise.

      2nd Trimester

At approximately eight weeks, an initial prenatal visit appointment will be made. At this time, Dr. Cova and her staff will complete a thorough medical and lifestyle history. Our goal is to create a foundation for a healthy pregnancy. We want you to feel confident in choosing The Complete Women’s Practice as your obstetrical provider.

      3rd Trimester

After the initial visit, Dr. Cova recommends you return every three to four weeks in the first 28 weeks of your pregnancy. Between 28-35 weeks, you should return every two to three weeks. After week 36 through delivery, a prenatal visit is necessary every week to monitor your pregnancy.

      Postpartum

Your journey continues after birth. Your post-partum visit is scheduled six weeks after delivery. However if you have a Caesarean section (C-section) or any other issues, we will see you sooner than six weeks. We also assist you with concerns related to breastfeeding or post-partum depression.

  • Testing and Screening
    • While pregnant, you should undergo routine lab tests. At The Complete Women’s Practice our laboratory suite provides you the convenience of same- day lab tests coupled with prenatal appointments. These tests can help Dr. Cova detect possible concerns regarding you and your baby’s health.

      1st Trimester

Early in pregnancy, we will obtain samples from your blood, and urine. A cervical Pap test may be done to check for changes of the cervix. In addition, a test for sexually transmitted infections may be performed as required by the state. At each routine prenatal visit we will sample your urine to detect sugar and protein levels.

As part of your total prenatal wellness experience, we obtain the following blood test at the beginning of your pregnancy

      • Blood Type and Antigen
      • Hematocrit and Hemoglobin
      • Glucose
      • Rubella
      • Hepatitis B
      • Syphilis (required by the state)
      • HIV
      2nd Trimester

There are certain tests that are performed specifically in your second trimester. Gestational diabetes screening is performed between 26-28 weeks. Patients that develop gestational diabetes are co managed with a perinatologist and dietician to ensure optimal blood sugar control.

The second trimester is also an optimal time to consider cord blood banking. Banking your newborn’s cord blood stem cells allows for immediate access to the stem cells if needed for a transplant. Dr. Cova will discuss your cord blood banking options during the second trimester.

Group B streptococcus vaginal culture obtained at 36 weeks. If Group B streptococcus culture is positive antibiotics will be administered during labor.

      Genetic Carrier Screening

The reality is any woman of child bearing age may carry common genetic conditions. If undetected carriers can pass these conditions on to their unborn child. At your initial prenatal visit carrier screening for the following genetic conditions is offered:

      • Cystic Fibrosis Carrier Status- 1 in 30 individuals are carriers
      • Spinal Muscle Atrophy Carrier Status- 1 in 40-50 individuals are carriers
      • Fragile X Syndrome- 1 in 259 women are carriers. To learn more click here.
      • Pan-Ethnic Carrier Testing- Carrier screening offered for patients of various ethnic backgrounds at higher risk for such diseases as Tay Sachs disease and other metabolic disorders. To learn more click here.
      Screening for Fetal Chromosomal Abnormalities

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that all pregnant women be offered a screening test for fetal chromosomal abnormalities, regardless of the woman’s age. Screening may be a maternal blood test done in the first trimester along with ultrasound, or it can be a maternal blood test done in the second trimester without ultrasound, or a combination of both.

      To learn more click here.

Appropriate referrals to perinatology and genetic counseling are made if any abnormal screening results are identified.

Dr. Cova and her staff are mindful of each individual expectant mother. We will provide extensive tests and screenings to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

      Antepartum Testing

Various conditions may arise during your pregnancy that may require more intensive surveillance. Examples include gestational diabetes, hypertension, fetal growth restriction, low amniotic fluid, etc. This testing is done through fetal non-stress testing and biophysical profile to ensure fetal well-being. Fetal non-stress testing requires approximately 15-30 minutes once or twice weekly. At The Complete Women’s Practice we have a relaxing room dedicated for our obstetrical patients requiring this monitoring.

  • Ultrasound
    • 011

In our state-of-the-art ultrasound suite, our expert technician utilizes the GE Voluson ultrasound imaging system to obtain sharp defined images of your developing fetus. A detailed report is generated for your confidential medical records and Dr. Cova’s assessment. Our ultrasound suite is located in our facility to allow you same- day appointments.

  • Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
    • Bio-identical hormones are derived from natural plant compounds and have the same chemical structure as the ones made in your body. Preliminary testing can be done with either blood, saliva, or both, and may be repeated every 3-6 months depending upon physician recommendations. Dr. Cova only prescribes compounded hormones that are manufactured according to the highest industry standards. Some patients notice results within a week while others may need additional time.

The benefits of bio-identical hormones will be noticed as you restore your natural sense of well-being. You are supporting your immune system and reducing inflammation. This has tremendous positive benefits on your brain, heart muscle, bones, and your sleep. Bio- identical hormones have transformed the lives of many patients.

      Bio-Identical Hormones

      • Chemical structure is exact replica of human hormones
      • Fits hormone receptor exactly
      • Helps with all hormonal symptoms
      • Individualized dosing
      • Lab testing/monitoring available
      • Must be obtained from compounding pharmacy

      Conventional Hormone Therapy

      • Chemical structure is different than human hormones
      • Fits hormone receptor well
      • Helps with hot flashes and vaginal dryness
      • One-size-fits-all dosing
      • No monitoring tests available
      • Can be obtained at a regular pharmacy (e.g., CVS, Walgreens, Kroger)
  • Why is Dutch Testing Better?
    • The DUTCH model provides excellent results for reproductive hormones and may be a significant improvement compared to salivary testing. The better saliva assays are a good way to see the timing of hormones (when did I ovulate? Did I have a significant progesterone surge?). DUTCH is a little better for this line of questioning (with our DUTCH Cycle Mapping test) and quite a lot better at determining whether the patient is low, normal or high for their estradiol status. One of the things I have loved about DUTCH testing is how well we can define the patient with respect to estrogen (accurate values AND metabolites) and cortisol (free pattern AND metabolites).

    • Dutch Testing

Do you suffer from sleep disturbances, fatigue, depression, irritability, anxiety, mood swings, weight gain, high cholesterol, hair loss, dry skin, low libido, poor focus, memory lapses, loss of muscle tone, night sweats, hot flashes, achiness, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraine headaches?

Hormone Pellet Therapy places small, time released pellets of bio-identical hormones in the fat under your skin to be absorbed. The hormones in the pellets are bio-identical, meaning it is the exact molecular match of the human hormone. The process is quick and painless, like having your blood drawn. A small amount of local anesthesia is used to numb the skin before a small tube pushes the pellet into place, and is easily performed in the office.

Bio-identical hormones are derived from natural plant compounds and have the same chemical structure as the ones made in your body. Preliminary testing can be done with either blood, saliva, or both, and may be repeated every 3-6 months depending upon physician recommendations. Dr. Cova only prescribes compounded hormones that are manufactured according to the highest industry standards. Some patients notice results within a week while others may need additional time.

Why Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy is a Good Choice:

A 40-year-old woman has less than half of the testosterone she did at 21. This drop has enormous implications for her health, well-being and physical resilience. Most testosterone is made by the ovaries with the rest of it being made in the adrenal glands. Women are more sensitive to testosterone than men. In other words, they need a lower circulating level in their bodies to provide for their physical, emotional and neurological health. This increased sensitivity leads to a rapid development of problems when a comparatively small drop in available testosterone occurs.

What is involved in starting on Bio-identical Hormone therapy?

You will fill out a brief medical history and a symptoms questionnaire. We will discuss your symptoms and review the results from your blood test that you had drawn prior to your appointment. Known risk factors and side effects are minor and uncommon, though these will be discussed with you as well. If you decide to proceed, it takes less than five minutes to insert the pellets. You can resume normal activities (except swimming and strenuous exercise which require a 4-day wait). You can expect to feel some improvements within the first week.

Follow Up:

4 weeks after your first insertion, you will be asked to get another blood test and then come in to discuss what you have experienced in symptom relief. We will decide whether any adjustment needs to be done to your future dose based on your blood test and symptoms. We also encourage you to further enhance your own health by using the new found energy from restored to hormone levels to exercise regularly and eat well. In your first year of treatment, expect to have 3-4 insertions, typically women require insertion every three months. You can stop BHT treatment at any time, which will cause hormone levels to drift back to your pre-treatment levels and your pre-treatment symptoms to return. There is no age limit on treatments. Though uncommon, patients as young as 25 (such as those with PCOS or severe PMS) as well as women in their 70’s or older have had wonderful benefits from this therapy.

Misconceptions dispelled:

Testosterone does not make one angry or violent. Quite the opposite! Testosterone has been shown to increase “friendliness” by decreasing irritability, anger, sadness, nervousness and tiredness. Nor is there any scientifically valid evidence showing testosterone increases the risk of heart disease or death. In fact, years of solid research has led many experts to believe that testosterone is protective of the cardiovascular system and breasts.

Are there side effects?

Testosterone therapy side effects are uncommon, mild, and manageable. The most common side effects are increased facial or body hair, a mild acne breakout, or an overly increased libido. Should they occur, these side effects are temporary and resolve upon decreasing the dosage.
