Sciton Halo™ Laser Treatment at COVA MedSpa in Centerville, Ohio

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed. Unwanted hair grows on various regions of the body. Often, individuals find the presence of hair in certain regions of the body unsightly or embarrassing. In other instances, individuals wish to lessen the need for shaving, waxing, tweezing, or other methods of hair removal. Most commonly, laser hair removal is used to reduce hair growth on the face, back, legs, forearm, underarm, and bikini line. However, laser hair removal can be used to permanently reduce the amount of hair on any area of the body.

Before you learn how laser hair removal works, you need to understand how hair grows. Hair grows from deep within hair follicles, which are thin cavities embedded in the dermis. Hair does not grow continuously, but grows in a three-phase cycle. While the rate at which hair grows differs by individual, the length of the hair growth cycle generally depends on the type of hair. For example, the active growth phase of the hair on your head may last several years, while hair on the body has an active growth phase that may last only a few months. For this reason, a series of several treatments is required to optimize results.

Procedure Preparation
Prior to the start of your procedure, the physician may choose to shave or trim the hair in the area. Often, the physician will apply a cooling gel to the treatment area, which will help prevent heat produced by the laser from damaging your skin. In contrast, the physician may use a laser with a special cooling tip that applies a coolant during the procedure. Although the procedure is not typically painful, you may request a topical anesthetic if you are especially sensitive to pain. You will likely be given eyewear to protect your eyes from the intense light produced by the laser. The length of a laser hair removal procedure depends on the treatment area. A procedure in which hair is removed from a small region, such as the underarm, may take only minutes, while a larger area, such as the legs, may last approximately one hour.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

Most patients require a series of 6 treatments for 80% hair reduction. Some patients may require up to 12 treatments to achieve optimal results.

What skin types can be treated for Laser Hair Removal?

Our CYNOSURE Apogee Elite can accommodate all skin types.

How long does the laser hair removal procedure last?

Length of treatment will be determined based on the size of the area treated . For example to laser an upper lip, it will take no more than ten to fifteen minutes. A larger treatment area like a full back or legs can take up to an hour.

Will I be sore after the procedure? Any tips to ease discomfort?

At COVA MedSpa, we utilize the Zimmer Cryo 5 cooler. This minimizes pain and thermal injury during laser hair removal treatments. Unlike other cooling methods the Zimmer Cryo 5 can cool the epidermis before, during, and after non-invasive laser treatments. Additionally, we provide the option of using a topical anesthetic cream for application prior to treatment to minimize any discomfort. Following a laser treatment, most people do not experience soreness. Some people will experience a histamine reaction where redness and/or itching may occur. Most of the time, over the counter cortisone cream will quickly resolve these issues.

Will I have dressings or bandages after the procedure?

No dressings or bandages are required following laser hair removal treatments.

Are there special instructions for eating, sleeping, or bathing?

There are no restrictions regarding eating or sleeping before or after a treatment. Patients may return to their normal skin care regimens after treatment, but any harsh lotions, for example, salicylic acids or retinols need to be avoided for 72 hours following treatment. The area treated also needs to be kept as cool as possible following treatment for 24 hours. This includes no hot tubs, hot baths, or extensive working out.

What products are recommended pre and post treatment?

We recommend that all patients use a post procedure cream or serum to help soothe the skin, which you can purchase over the counter. For your convenience, we carry several medical grade products for optimal post procedure care. For those that experience a histamine reaction, we recommend an antihistamine such as cortisone cream. Aloe is also very soothing to the skin following a treatment. Sunscreen is a must have while completing a series of laser treatments. A medical grade sunscreen is recommended to prevent adverse reactions pre and post procedure treatments.

Will I need to co<br /> me back for appointments after the procedure?

The laser hair removal treatment is a multi-visit process… The laser can only kill the follicle when the hair is in the active phase of the growth cycle. The growth cycle comes around about every six weeks for most people. Therefore, you will have a total of six treatment six weeks apart.

What color hair may be treated?

The laser is not as effective on blonde, red, or gray hair…. As with all lasers they are color seeking. Blonde, white and gray hair is more difficult to treat due to a lack of melanin, which is the laser’s target.

What are the recommendations for sun exposure before treatments?

Light to medium skin typed individuals should avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks. Medium to dark skin typed individuals should avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks.
