1st Trimester

Dr. Cova believes it is important to begin prenatal care sooner rather than later. A missed menstrual cycle could be an indication of gestation. We start by making a confirmation of pregnancy appointment. This is an opportunity for Dr. Cova and her staff to provide support and expertise.

Early in pregnancy, we will obtain samples from your blood, and urine. A cervical Pap test may be done to check for changes of the cervix. In addition, a test for sexually transmitted infections may be performed as required by the state. At each routine prenatal visit, we will sample your urine to detect sugar and protein levels.

As part of your total prenatal wellness experience, we obtain the following blood test at the beginning of your pregnancy

  • Blood Type and Antigen
  • Hematocrit and Hemoglobin
  • Glucose
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis (required by the state)
  • HIV

2nd Trimester

At approximately eight weeks, an initial prenatal visit appointment will be made. At this time, Dr. Cova and her staff will complete a thorough medical and lifestyle history. Our goal is to create a foundation for a healthy pregnancy. We want you to feel confident in choosing The Complete Women’s Practice as your obstetrical provider.

There are certain tests that are performed specifically in your second trimester. Gestational diabetes screening is performed between 26-28 weeks. Patients that develop gestational diabetes are co managed with a perinatologist and dietician to ensure optimal blood sugar control.

The second trimester is also an optimal time to consider cord blood banking. Banking your newborn’s cord blood stem cells allows for immediate access to the stem cells if needed for a transplant. Dr. Cova will discuss your cord blood banking options during the second trimester.

3rd Trimester

After the initial visit, Dr. Cova recommends you return every three to four weeks in the first 28 weeks of your pregnancy. Between 28-35 weeks, you should return every two to three weeks. After week 36 through delivery, a prenatal visit is necessary every week to monitor your pregnancy.

Group B streptococcus vaginal culture obtained at 36 weeks. If Group B streptococcus culture is positive antibiotics will be administered during labor.

Screening for Fetal Chromosomal Abnormalities

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that all pregnant women be offered a screening test for fetal chromosomal abnormalities, regardless of the woman’s age. Screening may be a maternal blood test done in the first trimester along with ultrasound, or it can be a maternal blood test done in the second trimester without ultrasound, or a combination of both.

Appropriate referrals to perinatology and genetic counseling are made if any abnormal screening results are identified.

Dr. Cova and her staff are mindful of each individual expectant mother. We will provide extensive tests and screenings to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Antepartum Testing

Various conditions may arise during your pregnancy that may require more intensive surveillance. Examples include gestational diabetes, hypertension, fetal growth restriction, low amniotic fluid, etc. This testing is done through fetal non-stress testing and a biophysical profile to ensure fetal well-being. Fetal non-stress testing requires approximately 15-30 minutes once or twice weekly. At The Complete Women’s Practice, we have a relaxing room dedicated for our obstetrical patients requiring this monitoring.

Postpartum

Your journey continues after birth. Your postpartum visit is scheduled six weeks after delivery. However, if you have a Caesarean section (C-section) or any other issues, we will see you sooner than six weeks. We also assist you with concerns related to breastfeeding or postpartum depression.
